Taking place every last Friday of the month – this intimate little club has played host to a huge range of comics over the last 25 years, including Harry Hill, Lee Evans, Eddie Izzard & Jo Brand, to name a just handful. Only 45 minutes on the train from Fenchurch Street and a 5 minute walk from Westcliff station – I really couldn’t recommend the Joker Club highly enough. 3 comics for a tenner, £3 a pint and a chicken curry for £3.50. Bargains.
Despite a very Essex-friendly 20 minutes from headliner Lee Hurst (“They Think it’s all Over” for all those over the age of 21) and able support from BBC Radio 2’s new Comedy award winner, Angela Barnes – there was one thing that stood out about Friday nights show, and that thing was Lewisham’s finest – Rob Beckett.
Having won just about every new comic award going, you’ll struggle to find a more polished and high tempo performer on the circuit – and having only been gigging for the last couple of years, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was at least a decade.
Becketts material is basically observational stuff – but with some amazingly surreal flourishes, not least an awesome 5 minutes on his mums Dog……escaping to Woolwich. He comes across as massively likeable and has, quite frankly, a funny face – so the chances are you’ll see him as a talking head on some shite “100 greatest blah blah blah” show. If you get the chance though, go and see him live – even if just to say, “oh yeah, he does look a bit like Pat Butcher”
