We asked friend and film maker Ed Hunter which comedy classic he would recommend to our readers and why. He pulled out the big guns for this the first article in our #CultComedyClassics series.
.
Play it Again Sam is a funny, funny film. The recent reputation of Woody has been tarnished by “scandals” in his personal life. But more importantly, he just seems to make lame films nowadays. But without him………Ricky Gervais and Curb Your Enthusiasm wouldn’t exist. Play It Again Sam was made in 1972.
.
Woody was a young geek of a nerd.
He didn’t drive a car.
He was a coward.
He wore glasses.
He was having a permanent bad hair life.
And he was a disaster magnet with women.
But he TRIED.
My God he tried.
And in that trying came the comedy.
.
He gave every bumbling, teenage kid who wasn’t a sporty, macho-type the feeling there was hope with the opposite sex……….. a slim hope. Woody plays a Jewish film fan whose wife leaves him for a Hells Angel Nazi biker. He asks her for one good reason why she doesn’t like him…….. she gives him Ten. Including she finds him..
“emotionally, mentally, sexually immature and physically repulsive”.
“But why don’t you like me?” he says.
He actually buys a Sports Day medal to impress his date…………
But he could only afford the Bronze.
When he is introduced to his date he simply raises his hand and grunts like a swine.
He blurts “I LOVE the rain! It washes memories off the sidewalk of life”
.
The film has great characters, a funny story, it’s truthful, but most of all, it has one-liners to die for.
